Robin Piatt was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. It was during this time that her passion for costumes evolved. She has always been captivated by the idea of visualizing how characters in stories look–why they look this way, where they are, and how this can help tell their story.

She attended Vassar College, where she majored in art history, with a focus on studying costume from a variety of different cultural and artistic traditions. This led to a thesis on the Artistic Dress Movement of the late 19th century. Throughout college, she worked in the drama department's costume shop, and costume designed department shows. Robin spent summers in college working at various summer theaters, including the Williamstown Theatre Festival. After college, she spent a season as the costumes intern at Portland Stage Company in Maine and another season as a costume apprentice at the Juilliard School. ​
